Recipe

Ingredients (serves 1):

3 ounces rye or bourbon
Orange wheel, halved
1 tsp coarse sugar
2-3 dashes Angostura bitters
Club soda
Maraschino cherry
Ice

Directions:

  • Place orange slices in a chilled “rocks” glass
  • Add sugar and bitters
  • Muddle until sugar is dissolved
  • Drop in a Maraschino cherry
  • Fill glass with ice
  • Add bourbon, top with club soda
  • Stir gently and serve

Bartender’s Hint:  Stir the Old Fashioned just lightly enough to raise the muddled ingredients up off the bottom of the glass without dispersing them completely, as the charm of this drink is found in its layered flavors:  The strong bite of the whiskey on the first sip, followed by the sweet/bitter orange coming through, subtly at first and then smooth and delicious at the end…yummy!

sign me up! What is the preferred Bourbon?

That’s the beauty of this cocktail — it’s super flexible. I’ll never claim to be a connoisseur of bourbon but I’ve tried it with Woodford, Wild Turkey, even Crown Royal, all are tasty!
